Model Overview

The MG ZS EV is the first all-electric SUV under SAIC Motor's MG brand. It was launched in China as the "MG EZS" in the first half of 2019, while overseas markets adopted the unified MG ZS EV moniker. Built on the petrol-powered MG ZS platform, this global all-electric B-segment SUV became the first Chinese EV to meet stringent European homologation standards such as E-MARK and REACH. During its initial domestic launch, post-subsidy pricing started from approximately RM119,800, while in the UK, it carried an entry price of around £25,000 (approx. RM214,000). Serving as the pioneer model for MG’s European market comeback, the ZS EV played a vital role in making affordable electric SUVs accessible across major overseas EV markets, securing over 15,000 customers in Europe by the end of 2020.
Design Language
The overall styling of the MG ZS EV carries forward the "Emotional Dynamism" design philosophy of the petrol-powered ZS, projecting a youthful, sporty, and trendy appeal. While early models retained a conventional front grille outline, the 2022 mid-lifecycle facelift ditched the grille entirely for a clean, closed-off front fascia. It also adopted "Silverstone" full-LED headlamps (incorporating 21 LED units) and redesigned "Phantom" full-width LED taillights, giving it a much more dedicated EV road presence. Body dimensions measure 4,314 mm in length (4,323 mm on the facelift), 1,809 mm in width, and 1,620 mm in height (1,649 mm on the facelift), with a 2,585 mm wheelbase (2,581 mm on the facelift). Exterior appointments also include an EV-exclusive breathing illuminated badge, a panoramic sunroof, and 17-inch 'Windblade' dual-tone machined alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin tyres.
Powertrain and Performance
In terms of powertrain, the MG ZS EV has undergone notable mechanical upgrades over its lifespan. Early iterations featured a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor delivering 110 kW (approx. 150 PS) and 350 Nm of torque, completing the 0-50 km/h sprint in just 3.1 seconds. The 2022 facelift introduced revised motor setups: the Standard Range variant puts out 130 kW (approx. 177 PS) and 280 Nm, whereas the Long Range variant is rated at 115 kW (approx. 156 PS) and 280 Nm, with top speed electronically capped at 175 km/h for both models. The 0-100 km/h century sprint takes roughly 8.6 seconds. For the battery, initial batches were equipped with a 44.5 kWh CATL ternary lithium battery pack offering an NEDC-rated range of 335 km; post-2022 models offered two battery options: a 51 kWh Standard Range pack (approx. 320 km WLTP range) and a 72.6 kWh Long Range pack (approx. 440 km WLTP range). DC fast charging is supported, juicing up the standard battery from 30% to 80% in about 30 minutes. The entire line-up also comes with Eco, Normal, and Sport drive modes, a three-stage adjustable regenerative braking system, and standard Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) reverse charging capabilities.
Chassis and Handling
Underneath, the ZS EV adopts a front-wheel-drive (FWD) configuration, suspended by front MacPherson independent struts and a rear torsion beam non-independent setup, with braking handled by front ventilated and rear solid discs alongside an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB). Although it utilises a rear torsion beam, the floor-mounted battery pack delivers a low centre of gravity with a near 51:49 front-to-rear axle weight distribution, noticeably enhancing cruising composure. In dynamic testing, the suspension compresses progressively with commendable lateral support through consecutive corners, keeping body roll well in check; however, the firmer damping calibration slightly compromises rear-seat ride comfort over harsh road undulations and speed humps. Ground clearance remains largely identical to the petrol version, ensuring fuss-free daily practicality.
Cabin and Equipment
Inside, early models were fitted with an 8-inch central touchscreen and a rotary drive selector, running the Zebra Zhixing operating system (later upgraded to the MG iSMART system) that supported connected navigation, intelligent voice control, over-the-air (OTA) updates, smartphone remote control, and one-touch parking fee payments. The 2022 facelift brought a comprehensive cabin overhaul—featuring a 7-inch full digital instrument cluster and a 10.1-inch floating central touchscreen powered by the updated MG iSMART infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support. Convenience and comfort features include a perforated leather multifunction sports steering wheel, a panoramic sunroof, automatic climate control with rear air vents and PM2.5 air filtration, heated front seats, and wireless smartphone charging, while later revisions further added rear privacy glass and power-adjustable front seats.
Safety and Intelligent Driving
On the safety front, the MG ZS EV scored a full five-star Euro NCAP crash rating in December 2019, making it the first B-segment all-electric SUV to achieve this accolade. It recorded scores of 90% for Adult Occupant Protection, 85% for Child Occupant Protection, 64% for Vulnerable Road Users, and 70% for Safety Assist. Higher-spec variants come equipped with the MG PILOT Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) suite, integrating full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB with pedestrian and cyclist detection), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), Door Opening Warning (DOW), and a 360-degree surround-view camera. Passive safety is equally comprehensive, featuring multi-directional airbags and a high-tensile body shell engineered to preserve cabin integrity during collisions.
Market Performance and Reception
The MG ZS EV stands as one of the most defining success stories for MG following its resurgence in Europe. After its debut, the EV quickly climbed into Norway's top five pure electric sales charts and took a commanding 17.5% market share in the Dutch private EV segment in the first three quarters of 2020, becoming the most sought-after EV among private buyers there. In the UK, strong demand for the ZS EV propelled MG to become the fastest-growing car brand in 2020. The model also bagged the 2021 "Family Car of the Year - Electric" award from the Flemish Automobile Association (VAB) in Belgium. Domestic owner feedback generally highlights that as SAIC's first global EV, the ZS EV offers solid reliability in design, interior packaging, and safety, though NVH sound insulation and rear suspension bump absorption still have room for improvement. Overall, the MG ZS EV is the first pure electric compact SUV from a Chinese marque to achieve a European five-star safety rating and widespread commercial success, serving as a historic milestone in the overseas expansion of Chinese automakers.
